It’s also important to play the player, meaning to pay attention to the other players at the table and try to figure out what they are holding. A large portion of this skill is based on reading other players’ body language and behavior, but it can also be learned by analyzing patterns. For example, if a player consistently checks after the flop, it’s likely that they are holding a weak hand.
Some players get caught up in the emotion of the game and start to lose at a much faster rate than others. The divide between break-even beginner players and those who are winning at a high rate is not as wide as some think, though. It’s usually just a few small adjustments that a beginner can make over time to change the way they play the game and start to win at a higher level.
Those adjustments don’t have to be complex. One of the simplest is to start thinking about the game in a more cold, detached, and mathematical way rather than emotionally or superstitiously. It’s also helpful to spend some time studying the basics of the game, such as how hands rank and the significance of position.
